Charter is an early alarm and a clear plan
The clients don't care how I feel about the sunrise. They care that the airplane is at the FBO when I said it would be, and that I have already looked at the weather between here and wherever the day just changed to.
I fly light jets on charter. Some days it is an out and back. Some days a meeting gets added and the trip grows a leg while I am still drinking the first coffee. The flying is the part that is easy to describe and the smaller part of the job. The rest is being early, being current, and not improvising the things that belong on a checklist.
I came up through smaller airplanes. The commercial written, the instrument work, then turbine time somebody else had to trust me with. Nobody skipped the knowledge test because the jet looked serious. Systems, weather, performance. I still use that habit in the briefing. It is just faster now, and there is a passenger who has a wheels-up time.
The good trips are quiet. Someone asleep, someone on a call, the clearance as filed. I watch the fuel and land where the plan said. When the plan has to change, I say so before we are airborne, not after.
Charter rewarded me once I stopped treating it like a series of cool legs and started treating it like a job that other people plan their day around. The certificate got me the seat. Knowing the material is what keeps the day boring in the right way.
